Schizophrenia is a disease that affects between 15 to 50% of the population. According to data from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), schizophrenia is the most common mental disorder in the United States. It affects between 15 to 50% of the population. A small study of patients treated with Seroquel and Seroquel XR for the treatment of schizophrenia found that the drug was associated with a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, particularly in elderly patients and patients who were on long-term anticholinergic therapy. This is the first large, prospective, and long-term study of the use of Seroquel and Seroquel XR in patients with schizophrenia.”
The study was published in the August 2017 issue ofJAMA Internal Medicine. A total of 2,821 patients with schizophrenia received the drug in the clinical trial. Of these patients, 1,163 were randomized to receive Seroquel XR (quetiapine fumarate) or Seroquel and Seroquel, and 2,687 were randomized to receive Seroquel and Seroquel XR, and 1,849 were randomized to receive Seroquel and Seroquel XR.
The results of the study were statistically significant. Patients who received Seroquel XR had a lower risk of cardiovascular death, including death due to myocardial infarction, stroke, cardiac arrest, or unstable angina, compared to patients who received Seroquel and Seroquel XR. Patients who received Seroquel XR had a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease, particularly in patients who were on long-term anticholinergic therapy, and had a lower risk of cardiovascular death than patients who received Seroquel and Seroquel XR.
Seroquel XR is approved for the treatment of chronic stable depressive episodes and has been shown to be effective in treating bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder. However, Seroquel XR has been shown to have some potential side effects, including insomnia and decreased appetite, and has not been approved for use in the treatment of schizophrenia.
